  • The ankle collar: You will see this as the wrap above the shoe opening which holds the heel in its place. Pay attention to how the padding interacts with your ankles, whether your heel slips while wearing the shoe, and whether it irritates your Achilles tendon.
  • The heel counter: This is the cup that supports and cradles your heel. Some shoes will have an external heel wrap to provide a similar function.
