Cold Weather Basics

Prep for frigid temperatures with these KURU GURU tips to warm shoes, insulation, and weather-proofing.

Here are some ways to give your feet some love during cold weather:

  • Check the level of insulation. The warm shoes might have a number after the insulation name. It could fall between 100 grams and 1000 grams, and the higher numbers mean the boots are warmer too.
  • Wear boots with a waterproof membrane included in their design as they prevent moisture and ensure breathability. Note that several companies may use varying agents for repelling moisture.
  • Choose the right socks. Wearing thick socks or layering can cause pressure on your feet and disrupt blood circulation to your toes. Thus, pick socks that are thin or medium-thick. They should also be breathable and moisture-wicking.
  • Use toe warmers. These single-use inserts offer over six hours of heat. Just make sure they don’t go directly against your skin to avoid burns.
  • Don’t tie your warm boots too tight as moisture won’t evaporate. Instead, keep the laces loose to offer enough breathability, comfort, and foot protection.
  • Let your shoes dry out overnight. Place them in a warm environment with adequate space to allow air circulation. If the inside of your boots is too wet, remove the insoles and stuff your shoes with dry, unused newspaper.

Types of Warm Shoes & Finding the Best Fit

There are so many options for warm shoes out there, we’re breaking down our favorites!

Cold weather can’t stop you from going out with comfy, stylish, warm shoes. Here are some types of warm winter shoes you can wear to excel in the fashion department.

Chunky sneakers: With chunky sneakers, you get enough insulation, coverage, and that impressive sneaker flare. They’re also perfect for places that don’t have winter weather.

Thigh-high boots: Thigh-high boots are chic, classic, and fashionable—no wonder why they’re a top favorite among celebrities and fashion enthusiasts! As they offer high coverage over your legs, they’re the perfect warm shoes for winter. They are made of different materials, such as suede and leather, so you’re free to choose based on your style and needs.

Ankle-length boots: Whether you’re wearing long winter dresses and trousers, thin cut jeans, or any outfit, you can rock a cool and beautiful look with ankle-length boots.

Loafers: If wearing warm boots is not your style, you can pick a great pair of loafers instead. Fashionable black loafers are a good start as they easily complement any outfit. You can also pair them with see-through stockings and winter dresses for a more striking look.

Slip ons: With slip ons, you won’t have to tie the laces. Whether it’s summer or winter, slip ons can be easily paired with your casual clothes.

To find the best fit when buying warm boots, warm slip-on shoes, warm shoes for work, or warm house shoes, have your feet measured. Even if you’ve been wearing a specific size, this may change over time. Besides, each manufacturer will have different bases for the sizes.

Then, measure your feet at the end of the day because this is when they’re fully expanded. Before buying warm shoes for cold feet, check if there’s a finger-width space between the longest toe and the end of the shoes.

FAQS

Answers to the most frequently asked questions are just a click away.

What shoes are good for the cold?

+-

Shoes that are good for the cold include knee-high boots, ankle boots, Chelsea boots, platform shoes, loafers, and even chunky sneakers. Whether you’re going to work, walking, running errands, or traveling, you need warm shoes to keep your feet warm, dry, and comfortable.

Are your shoes considered orthopedic shoes?

+-

While our shoes are not currently considered orthopedic by a medical standard, we have received thousands of positive reviews from customers who say their KURUs helped reduce or eliminate their pain.

Can I use custom orthotics with KURU shoes?

+-

Due to the anatomical shape of the KURUSOLE, custom orthotics with a rounded heel fit best inside our shoes. If the underside of the custom orthotic (the part that sits on the footbed) is squared off, then it may not fit into our deep heel cup—which is rounded like your foot.

That said, many of our customers tell us the KURUSOLE technology offers better support and stability than they expected, and that they don't need to wear their custom orthotics with KURU shoes.

How is the arch support of KURU shoes?

+-

KURU shoes deliver excellent arch support without the need for thick inserts or expensive, custom orthotics.

Superior arch support starts with our patented KURUSOLE technology, which delivers natural cushioning and dynamically hugs your heel with every step. Every foot is unique, and our ULTIMATE INSOLES adapt to fit your needs by using your own body heat to custom-mold to the shape of your feet over time.

The corrective nature of our superior arch support is designed to neutralize your weight distribution and place your foot in the best anatomical position. This support can take some getting used to. We suggest slowly breaking in your new shoes over the course of 2–3 weeks.

I just received a pair of your shoes and my feet are sore/hurt after wearing them. Why is that?

+-

Some customers experience tenderness when they first start wearing a new pair of KURUs. That’s ok! Your body may need time to adjust to the new levels of anatomical support you experience with our patented KURUSOLE technology. Our shoes are also designed to mold to your unique foot shape, which takes a bit of a break-in period.

To help mitigate this, we suggest you follow our break-in procedure, including wearing your KURUs for a couple hours per day around the house in the first couple of weeks as they break in and form to your foot.
