It’s only December, and I’m already getting cabin fever. I miss the long summer days and the diversity of outdoor activities that inspire me during the warm seasons.
I love the outdoors, I easily get complacent as the weather turns colder. It’s too easy for me to think of positioning myself around the fireplace and blissfully hiding away until Spring. But after a while, I tend to get cagey. I need to get out and connect with nature. It's time to lace up my winter shoes and get outside.
With the onset of winter, it may be tempting to think that you’re forced to stay indoors and use the absence of warm weather as an excuse not to stay physically active. Don’t worry. It may be cold, but there are plenty of ways to invigorate the long winter months.
You don’t have to be a skilled skater to have a great time ice skating—even falling is fun. Get some fresh air and have a blast right inside the city. Not all ice rinks are indoors--there are plenty of open-air rinks around to allow you to take in the crisp air outside. Take the family along or go with friends. This winter pastime is a great aerobic warm-up and perfect for getting out of the house.
What used to be an ordinary way to walk in deep snow has become an extremely popular winter hobby. Snowshoeing is an excellent way to get out in the woods and add a little adventure to your life. If you love to hike during the warm months, snowshoeing is the activity for you. Just bundle up and wear waterproof, highly supportive, and comfortable hiking shoes.
Not only does it help keep you in top shape this winter, but cross-country skiing is also a great way to take full advantage of the cold and snow. You can take a slow, steady pace for a more relaxing experience or pick up speed for an invigorating full-body workout. It’s easy to learn, and you can do it practically anywhere. The best part is, unlike downhill skiing at resorts, cross country is always free.
Here’s a wonderful outdoor adventure for any personality. While requiring more gear and planning than some activities, snowmobiling is an awesome way to get out in the woods and explore more quicker. This is the perfect activity for an adrenaline rush or a meandering journey through the woods. Just ride prepared and wear warm, quality support shoes.
Don’t let the cold hold you hostage this winter. If you’re bored and need to get out of your rut, try some refreshing cold-weather activities to add excitement to your life. Get out there and enjoy yourself in the splendor of the outdoors. These cold-weather adventures are only available during this time of year, and if you're like me, you might find you like winter more than you thought.
