Common Causes of Fibromyalgia in Women

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that brings constant pain, fatigue, and sensitivity—challenges that can make even daily activities feel overwhelming. While the exact cause remains unclear, researchers have identified several factors that may increase your risk, especially for women.

Understanding these triggers can help you take control of your symptoms and find better ways to manage your pain. Here are some common causes:

  • Genetics. Fibromyalgia often runs in families, suggesting a genetic link. If a close family member has fibromyalgia, your risk of developing it increases. Certain genes may affect how the brain processes pain, making some people more likely to get fibromyalgia.
  • Infections. Some infections might trigger fibromyalgia or make its symptoms worse. Viral infections, like the Epstein-Barr virus, and bacterial infections, like Lyme disease, have been linked to the start of fibromyalgia symptoms in women.
  • Physical or Emotional Trauma. Traumatic events can trigger fibromyalgia. Physical trauma, such as injuries from accidents, and emotional trauma, like the loss of a loved one or major life changes, can lead to the development of fibromyalgia.
  • Stress. Chronic stress is a major factor in developing fibromyalgia. Long-term stress can change how the brain and nervous system work, affecting how the body feels pain and leading to chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia.
  • Hormonal Imbalances. Women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men, suggesting that hormones may play a role. Imbalances in hormones like cortisol and estrogen can influence pain sensitivity and stress responses.
  • Sleep Disorders. Poor sleep quality and sleep disorders, like sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, are common in people with fibromyalgia. Lack of good sleep can make pain and fatigue worse, contributing to the development and worsening of fibromyalgia symptoms.
  • Understanding these causes can help you and your doctor create a treatment plan to manage symptoms more effectively.

Effective Ways to Reduce and Treat Fibromyalgia

Living with fibromyalgia can feel overwhelming, but the right approach can make all the difference. Managing symptoms and improving your quality of life often requires a combination of treatments and lifestyle changes.

Understanding your options empowers you to take control of your pain and feel more like yourself again. Here are some proven ways to help you feel and move better:

  • Medication. Doctors may prescribe medications to help manage pain and improve sleep. Common options include pain relievers, antidepressants, and anti-seizure drugs, which can help reduce pain and improve sleep quality.
  • Exercise. Regular, low-impact exercise like walking, swimming, or yoga can help reduce pain and improve mood. Exercise also helps increase strength and flexibility, which can alleviate some of the physical symptoms of fibromyalgia.
  • Stress Management. Stress can worsen fibromyalgia symptoms, so managing stress is crucial. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, deep-breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce stress levels.
  • Sleep Improvement. Improving sleep quality is vital. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, creating a restful sleep environment, and avoiding caffeine and electronic devices before bed can help. Some people may benefit from sleep aids prescribed by a doctor.
  • Healthy Diet. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can improve overall health and energy levels. Avoiding processed foods and reducing sugar intake can also help manage symptoms.
  • Therapies. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and talk therapy can be beneficial. Physical therapy can help improve movement and reduce pain, while talk therapy can help with coping strategies and mental health support.

    Amazing

The best shoes ever. It’s helped my rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis pain."

    Absolutely love these shoes!

I have fibromyalgia and I work in retail so finding a pair of shoes that help with my pain is a big deal for me. These shoes were a big game changer for me. They've enabled me to be able to work longer hours with much less pain!"

    4th and favorite KURU

I love this shoe for a more casual tennis shoe. The comfort is incredible. I have fibromyalgia and have terrible symptoms in my ankles, feet and legs - these have made a huge difference for me. I have other styles of Kuru shoes but these are worn by far the most for daily use, casual walks, etc. They don't have as much ankle support for cardio workout or things like that. I usually wear a 6.5 to 7 so I ordered the 7 and felt that it was just a bit too roomy - I exchanged it for the 6.5 and although it seemed tight at first, it stretched just enough to fit perfectly."

The answer to tarsal tunnel and plantar fasciitis!!

First things first. I bought initially their new moccasin for my mom as xmas gift. She suffers tarsal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis and fibromyalgia. We've been looking for a product that would deliver actual relief. The moccasins we're too small & she wanted sneakers. She settled on the ATOM medium. The return/exchange process was seamless the ATOM fit a bit narrow as they are designed for high performance running. After the break in period we realized she needed wide. Again KURU surpassed our expectations with their great customer service. She promptly received the Atom Wide. Her pain has decreased significantly. She loves them and I couldn't be happier. We will definitely explore more of their options & gladly recommend them."

    Great all-around shoe!

I developed a plantar plate tear which was incredibly painful. And because of my history of fibromyalgia, I was looking for a shoe that would be comfortable, stylish, yet supportive so that my foot could heal with the other supportive measures my foot doctor recommended. I researched and found KURU shoes, decided to purchase these black STRIDEs, and have been very happy with my purchase. I wear them for everyday activities, and also when we took a trip to Europe. They have held up well and still are in great shape. Highly recommended!"
