What are Adjustable Shoes?

A flexible fit can be important for your foot health and comfort, and for people who need extra options, adjustable shoes are a must. Adjustable shoes are exactly what they sound like; shoes that can be adjusted to your preferences, and may come with various options including adjustable shoelaces and adjustable straps.

This is a great option for people who seek shoe adjustments as a result of foot conditions or people who want to easily slip in and out of their shoes. KURU Footwear offers many adjustable strap sandals and adjustable athletic shoes that provide the convenience of adjustable strap shoes with the comfort of orthopedic footwear.

How to Pair Your Adjustable Shoes and When to Wear Them

Explore how to style and wear the latest styles of adjustable shoes from KURU.

With adjustable straps and laces, KURU offers a variety of stylish footwear options that can be adjusted to your feet for an impeccable fit. Wondering what shoes might be best for that special occasion or all-black outfit? Check out the tips below from our KURU GURUs.

Think about the occasion: If you’re thinking about having a workout, it’s not safe to go to the gym in sandals. Be sure to think about the time and place when choosing a pair of adjustable shoes to determine the best fit for a particular activity.

Think about the season: This is especially important when trying to pair your adjustable shoes. Boots will work well during the winter while sandals will go along great with shorts during summer.

Choose comfort over style: If you find a stylish-looking pair of shoes that aren’t a good fit, be sure to look for comfortable shoes instead, especially if you plan to use them for hiking or exploration. There’s no point in walking for hours in a matching outfit that looks great if your feet will be aching for days after.

Think about contrasting colors: If you’re going to work out in an all-black outfit, you can choose sneakers with a pop of color to tie the look together.

Finish off with neutrals: Similarly, if you plan on wearing a colorful shirt or shorts to the gym, you can pick out neutral-colored adjustable shoes such as brown, black, or nude.

Shoe Fit Tips

Simplify the process of finding a pair of adjustable shoes that fit will with these helpful tips from our KURU GURUs.

Unfortunately, many people wrongly believe that everyone’s feet are all the same — this is wrong. People have different foot shapes and your shoe needs will depend on your unique foot shape. Some people may have flat feet, average arches, or high arches, so choosing the right shoe to fit your feet is important.

Buying shoes without knowing if they will fit properly may lead to pain or injury, so whenever you look for shoes that will perfectly fit you, it’s best to keep in mind the following:

  • Shoes that have a stiff back—you shouldn’t be able to move it around the heel
  • Shoes that have an adjustable strap or shoelaces
  • Shoes made from lightweight and flexible materials

FAQs

  • How do I adjust shoes that are too big?

If you bought the wrong shoe size by accident and are unable to take them back to the store, there’s no need to worry. If the difference isn’t too big, there are a few things you can do to alter your shoes for a better fit, such as:

    – You can apply heel grips or gel heel liners to improve the shoe fit

    – You can add a new insole to add more volume to your shoes

    – You can use more than one sock if there’s a lot of space that needs to be covered

    – You can visit a shoe care professional who may be able to make adjustments

  • Are KURU shoes considered orhtopedic shoes?

While our shoes are not currently considered orthopedic by a medical standard, we have received thousands of positive reviews from customers who say their KURUs helped reduce or eliminate their foot pain.

  • Can I use custom orthotics with KURU shoes?

Due to the anatomical shape of the KURUSOLE, custom orthotics with a rounded heel fit best inside our shoes. If the underside of the custom orthotic (the part that sits on the footbed) is squared off, then it may not fit into our deep heel cup—which is rounded like your foot.

That said, many of our customers tell us the KURUSOLE technology offers better support and stability than they expected, and that they don’t need to wear their custom orthotics with KURU shoes.

  • How is the arch support of KURU shoes?

KURU shoes deliver excellent arch support without the need for thick inserts or expensive, custom orthotics.

Superior arch support starts with our patented KURUSOLE technology, which delivers natural cushioning and dynamically hugs your heel with every step. Every foot is unique, and our ULTIMATE INSOLES adapt to fit your needs by using your own body heat to custom-mold to the shape of your feet over time.

The corrective nature of our superior arch support is designed to neutralize your weight distribution and place your foot in the best anatomical position. This support can take some getting used to. We suggest slowly breaking in your new shoes over the course of 2–3 weeks.

  • I just received a pair of your shoes and my feet are sore/hurt after wearing them. Why is that?

Some customers experience tenderness when they first start wearing a new pair of KURUs. That’s ok! Your body may need time to adjust to the new levels of anatomical support you experience with our patented KURUSOLE technology. Our shoes are also designed to mold to your unique foot shape, which takes a bit of a break-in period.

To help mitigate this, we suggest you follow our break-in procedure, including wearing your KURUs for a couple hours per day around the house in the first couple of weeks as they break in and form to your foot.

Features of Adjustable Shoes and Finding the Best Fit

Explore the process of selecting and fitting the ideal adjustable shoes for your feet and activity preference.

Adjustable shoes come with various features and can serve different purposes, whether you’re looking for pain relief or others. Luckily, KURU Footwear has designed shoes that can mold to your feet over time. This is especially important when you need comfort that other shoes can’t provide.

Other features may include a non-slip choice for people who are always on the move and are looking for more stability in their steps. Our All-Day shoes are a great choice for anyone who is always on their feet looking to ease the pressures of 12-hour shifts. Furthermore, our orthopedic shoes are designed to eliminate pain so you can enjoy all kinds of activities.

Now that you’ve considered the kind of features you need your shoes to have, it’s time to pick one. But before making a choice, be sure to consider the following when looking for a shoe with the best fit:

  • Your shoe’s heel support should be stable and soft and is barred from horizontal or vertical movement.
  • A shoe shouldn’t have a heel of over 2.5cm in height, otherwise, the ankle and heel could become prone to forefoot pain and sprains.
  • Look for as many adjustable features as possible, such as adjustable straps and adjustable heels.
  •  A good shoe will have enough room, both in width and depth, to give your toes space during walks or when participating in activities.

At KURU, we pride ourselves on our unique approach to shoe design. We believe that shoes should be shaped to fit the natural contours of your feet, which is why we create every pair in three distinct support layers, not just an insole.

Our revolutionary ergonomic design starts with a curved footbed and adds unparalleled triple-layer support that includes shock-absorbing KURUCLOUD, heel-cupping KURUSOLE, and arch-supporting ULTIMATE INSOLES. The result? Shoes that are so comfortable you’ll stop thinking about your feet.

    KURUSOLE

Our patented KURUSOLE protects and stabilizes the heel and provides dynamic flexion with each step. This plate extends from the arch to wrap around the heel—but not under it—to support and leverage your heel’s natural cushioning system: the fat pad.

Supportive, comfortable & stylish. I ordered the limited edition Tread sandals. The day they arrived I put them on and loved the look and feel of them. I wore them for the rest of that day. The next day I went online and ordered another pair of the exact same sandal because I didn’t want to ever be without them. I love them. I have no pain and they are so comfortable. The straps adjust so they aren’t too tight or too loose. What can I say: I love them! They are perfect.

Pain free. I bought these Kinetic shoes a couple weeks ago. I ordered men’s as I figured they would be wider. After wearing them to work for a week I realized I should have gotten wide shoes. I can’t return them cause I wore them, but how do you know? At home it’s carpet, at work it’s cement floors. It’s ok though cause I have no knee, leg or back pain when I wear them. I just adjust the laces to allow for swelling. I love these shoes!!! Would recommend to anyone who will listen!

Mind blown – freedom from orthotics. Bought these 5 weeks ago and am following the directions, 2-3hours a day= 4 mile morning walk over sidewalks & hard terrain. The support is on the outside of the shoe, no more metatarsal pads and bunions coverings that slip & slide. The freedom of putting my foot in My Chicane, adjusting the laces for my custom fit and going is tremendous. Still in the test period. Next month i will order another type of shoes from KURU. My narrow feet, fat bunions, not existent fat pads and tiny heels are comfortable. I could cry if these shoes workout as predicted. Will keep y’all posted. So far, in love.”

Comfortable, good fit. Roomy with adjustable laces for a good fit. I also like the cushioned tongue. The sole is flexible for comfortable walking.”

Just what I needed. After trying another model, I landed on the ATOM. I am so glad that I did. My main foot issues are bunions, flat feet and plantar fasciitis. The ATOM fits perfectly, true to size for me, plenty of wiggle room in the toes and the knit allows my bunions to breathe. I also like that the laces are adjustable for a custom fit. The style is just right for wearing with any casual outfit and for walking or working out. Give the ATOM a try, you’ll be glad too.”
