Morton's neuroma is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot, most commonly the area between your third and fourth toes. It may feel as if you are standing on a pebble in your shoe. The cause is a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves that connect to your toes. It may also make you feel a sharp, burning type ball of foot pain and stinging or numbing sensations in your toes.

What Causes Morton’s Neuroma?
A big culprit in the cause of Morton’s Neuroma is high-heeled shoes. We cannot stress how harmful and detrimental high-heeled shoes are to your feet. The best thing you can do is get rid of them and get shoes with good support. When your toes are squeezed together too often and for too long, the nerve that runs between your toes can swell and get thicker. This swelling can make it painful when you walk on that foot. Tight, or narrow shoes can make the pain worse. Sometimes, changing to shoes that give your toes more room can help. Look for shoes that offer a wider "toe box". If you cannot get new shoes immediately, try to find some shoe inserts that will give good support in your heels, arches, and ball of your foot.

How is it Diagnosed?
The best way to get it diagnosed is to see your physician and tell them that you are having regular foot pain in certain areas and that you may think that Morton’s Neuroma is the problem. A doctor can usually identify Morton’s neuroma during a physical exam. They will squeeze or press on the bottom of your foot or squeeze your toes together to see if it is painful. The doctor may also order an x-ray of your foot to rule out any other causes or injuries that may be the problem.

How to Treat The Symptoms
The good news is that there are a lot of things that you can do to treat Morton’s at home. Use these ideas to see if they relieve your symptoms:

  • Avoid wearing tight, or high-heeled shoes. Rather, find a well-fitted shoe with plenty of room for your toes. Find something with a broad toe box to give you the most space possible.
  • Rest your feet when you can. Whenever possible, reduce the activities that put pressure on the toes such as running or aerobics.
  • When it becomes painful, put ice or a cold pack on the area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Do not forget to use a thin cloth between the ice and your skin.
  • Try massaging the muscles around the nerve to reduce tension.
  • If nothing else helps, take anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce pain and swelling. Look for things with ibuprofen or naproxen, and remember to consult a doctor before taking any new medications.
