Great shoe for multiple reasons!
I found Kuru by searching "World's most comfortable" shoe into Google. I have always worn regular tennis shoes but have had increasing foot (flat feet), heal and knee pain (knee replacement a few years ago) as I have gotten older. So, I thought maybe it was time to look for a better shoe and hence my search. I read many reviews but there was one in particular from John that caught my attention. He had bought his Kurus for a trip to Germany and was planning on doing a lot of walking on cobblestone streets. He updated his review and his insights helped me make the choice to go with Kuru. I live in Belgium and even my driveway is made from Cobblestones so I know how difficult it can be to walk in European cities and villages with all the uneven surfaces and pedestrian challenges. I also work at an elementary school and routinely log 10,000 steps on my pedometer at work and that's not counting the 1 to 1 1/2 hours my wife and I walk on the farm roads or canals after work. I try to get 25,000 steps in a day. That's the back story and now the review.
The first thing I noticed about the Gravel Lo was that it is a very attractive and stylish shoe. I know it looks good on the website but I have been down that road before and received shoes whose proportions were not discernible on the website resulting in a less than flattering look. I hope Kuru eventually copies a very popular shoe website and offers a short video review of each shoe that shows it being worn with jeans and/or khakis to get a real sense of what it will look like. Back to the shoe, it is constructed from a very sturdy leather and the sole somehow is flexible and soft while showing virtually no sign of wear after 4 months of heavy/daily use. The shoe has been wet from rain and puddles but the leather has remained the same color (except for a bit of the aging patina which is nice) and texture throughout. The tongue is padded nicely and stays in place well. That's about all I can think of for the outside and look of the shoe.
The comfort level of this shoe was excellent for me from the time I first put them on. The most impressive thing for me is the heel cup that provides a cushioned firmness that I have ever experienced in any shoe before. There was not really a break-in time either. The shoes fit great and were super comfortable right out of the box and the fit really has not changed any. I have flat feet and the normal width Kurus are fine for me as well as the mid-foot and toe box areas are plenty wide enough.
Lastly, I am not sure why but it seems like I walk a little on the outside of this shoe. This works well for me as I tend to pronate in a bit.
P.S. I ordered a pair of Chicanes not long after buying these and have been very happy with them as well.
