The Heel Fat Pad: Nature's Cushion

The heel of the foot acts as a shock absorber for each step we take. Fortunately, the vulnerable heel bone is protected and cushioned by a fatty pad that helps to reduce much of the stress of heel strikes during movement. The heel is under enormous pressure while we are standing, walking, and running throughout the day, and often nature’s cushion is not enough to help prevent heel pain.

Our daily lives demand that we constantly stand and walk upon hard, sometimes rocky, and generally unforgiving surfaces. This sustained tension on our feet exhausts us and makes everyday movement painful.

The patent-pending KuruSole™ technology gives you the benefit of a custom orthotic midsole built directly into the shoe. This design better cushions and supports the heel fat pad by molding to the shape of your foot.

Stress and Inflammation of the Fat Pad

With so much pressure on the heel it’s no wonder we experience foot pain. Injuries to the heel are commonplace when you spend a lot of time on your feet or regularly engage in activities that overload the heel.

Inflammation in the fat pad often occurs due to this repeated, prolonged activity. Typically, this type of injury doesn’t require a long recovery period, but the risk is continuing to stress the heel and developing heel spurs or plantar fasciitis. Fat pad displacement has potential to occur with sustained stresses, and is sometimes felt by a bruise or ache, especially when walking across hard surfaces.

As we age, our heel fat pad gradually thins and is more susceptible to injury and persistent pain. Better support in this part of the foot is necessary for daily comfort and to help prevent strain.

KURU has refined a shoe design that offers increased support in the heel through a special HeelKradl that cups the heel with each strike. With this improved shock absorbing construction, the fat pad is pinched and held in place as you move.

Self Treatment for Fat Pad Pain

There are a number of steps you can take to treating pain in the fat pad that are easy and cost effective.

  • Rest and Ice - After injuring the heel, resting and icing the foot is necessary to allow swelling to go down and gradually increase resistance when walking and applying pressure to the heel.
  • Taping - Applying tape to the heel can temporarily alleviate some pain by adding some cushioning to the fat pad. This added shock absorption can help ease movement and act as supplemental support.
  • Rehabilitation Exercises - Eventually you have to get back on your feet and return to activity. For most heel fat pad pain, gradually resuming activity at a slower pace is an effective way to prevent further damage. Massaging the fat pad and stretching the underside of the foot can help relieve tension.
  • Supportive Shoes - The most reliable ongoing treatment is wearing cushioned, supportive shoes. For stress related injuries in the heel fat pad, wearing a more anatomical shoe can keep your heel fat pad comfortable and secure during the stresses of daily activity.

KURU midsole technology works to cup your heel and provide increased arch support like no other shoe. A deep heel cup and anatomical last built around the natural shape of your foot help preserve a healthy walking gait with the added benefit of total comfort for the whole foot.
